Just recently the world was set afire with the news that Manny Pacquiao has agreed to terms on a mega fight showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. The decision by Pacquiao to go ahead with March 13th date has had many celebrating the reality that one of the biggest fights in history could be just around the corner.
One man who doesn’t feel Pacquiao made the wisest of decisions, however, is Mayweather’s father, Floyd Sr. Brash and outspoken as he only knows how, Mayweather dropped a quick one liner to get our Friday night conversation rolling.
“I do feel that Pacquiao is making a mistake going up against my son.”
Everybody is entitled to an opinion and it’s obvious that Floyd Sr. is firm in his belief that his son is simply on another level than the Filipino icon, who recently defeated Miguel Cotto on November 14th to capture the WBO Welterweight title, his belt in a seventh weight class. When pressed further for why he feels Floyd Jr. will emerge on top, Papa Floyd was straight to the point.
“Floyd is the most technical fighter out there,” Sr. continued. “He’ll control the fight easily with his ring generalship. I don’t see anything that Pacquiao can bring for him. If Floyd stays away from that left it will be easy work.”
Despite not communicating with his son as heavily as he did prior to his September fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, Floyd Sr. is still obviously glad to see the opportunity of such a meaningful contest present itself. Despite having a relationship that has seen its share of hard times in years past, the love between father and son is evident.
“I haven’t talked to him too much lately because we’re both in the middle of move,” Floyd pointed out. “But of course I am happy for him and I’m glad the fight is taking place.”
The conversation was then turned to Pacquiao and what Floyd Sr. felt about his worth as a fighter. Wanting an honest take on Pacquiao’s skills in the ring I was instead thrown a curveball as Mayweather again turned the attention to his statement months prior that he believes The General Santos city native is using something to enhance his performance in the ring.
“I’m going to tell you what you really want to know, which is my personal opinion,” an extremely frank Mayweather chimed in. “Of course I think something shady is going on behind the scenes. A guy just can’t rise like that in weight class and punch the way he does. I feel he needs to be checked out before the next fight.”
Sensing that the discussion was about to take an ugly turn, the topic was changed and Mayweather was prodded for any last second comments about either his son, Pacquiao, or what their fight represents. Beliefs in tact, Floyd Sr. closed the conversation with a simple message.
“Manny Pacquiao shouldn’t have signed the fight. He isn’t going to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. In no shape or form can he possibly beat my son.”
