While “The Fight” has gobbled up most of the headlines so far this week, a few other stories got through.
Some people in the know say Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants “The Fight” and don’t see how Las Vegas can compete with him. His spectacular, brand new $1.2 billion stadium, which is the largest domed building in the world, would receive even more intense media coverage than the fight already expects meaning more money.
The fight which has suffered because of lack of publicity this week is Saturday’s Amir Khan vs. Dmitriy Salita bout in New Castle, England for the WBA 140 title. This fight could be a launching pad for Khan who will have Freddie Roach in his corner. I like champion Khan to win over No.1 contender Salita but he better pack a lunch. Roach is predicting a fourth or fifth round KO for his fighter over Salita.
Khan says he would never fight friend Manny Pacquiao. They occasionally spar together though.
I don’t see any American TV for this bout so look for Internet highlights or go to youtube.
I seriously wonder what Bob Arum generates in Frequent Flyer miles annually.
I would like to see another heavyweight pound on overrated and overweighted Cristobal Arreola the way Vitali Klitschko did in September. However Saturday night’s HBO opponent Brian Minto is too small and not rugged enough and cuts and bleeds to much to last more than a few brutal rounds with Arreola who I expect will be throwing just as many F-Bombs in his post fight interview.
The main event of the HBO doubleheader is my upset special of the year. I’m picking Sergio Martinez to defeat Paul Williams. Martinez has world class-talent and Williams did lose to Carlos Quintana. Remember I picked Michael Spinks to beat Mike Tyson.
A curious pay-per-view fight between Winky Wright and Grady Brewer has been cancelled. Some refer to Wright as a future Hall of Famer! Are you kidding me! I like him and all but he better have cash or a credit card if I’m working the door at the Canastota, NY shrine.
I believe Bernard Hopkins was coached during the day on how to handle the media questions about Roy Jones, Jr. losing to earlier in the day which spoils their rematch. Either way it was good fun saying that Australia is in Europe and he won’t fight there. Hopkins gets a pass from me. Hopkins is a future Hall of Famer. Winky is not.
The setbacks are racking up for Roy Jones, Jr. and after disastrous performance Wednesday in Australia against Danny Green (KO-1) Roy should consider giving it up. He’s 40, fabulously wealthy and still walks and talks well.
Romanian turned Canadian Lucian Bute looked Hollywood movie- star tremendous last Saturday night in Quebec City when he dismantled Librado Andrade on HBO in front an excited holiday weekend audience of 18,000 in defending his IBF Super Middleweight (168) belt and down the road fights with Kelly Pavlik and the Showtime Super Six Tournament Champion might be in his promising future.
