MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has said anew that he would run for Congress in the province of Sarangani.
Pacquiao issued the statement in a live interview over radio dzMM Saturday in response to a question about his political plans in 2010.
He said he would run under the local party People’s Champ.
Pacquiao ran and lost in 2007 when he ran for Congress in General Santos, losing to incumbent Darlene Antonino Custodio.
Pacquiao flew to General Santos, his home province, where he will be feted by his provincemates following his victory over Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto for the World Boxing Organization welterweight crown last November 15 (Manila time).
He arrived in Manila Friday and was given a rock star welcome here.
Pacquiao also received the Order of Sikatuna from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who said that the boxing icon deserved a “special award” for the honor he has brought to the country.
Pacquiao made boxing history when he won his seventh title in as many divisions, cementing his hold on being the best pound for pound fighter in the world.
