Ivan Montiel caught up with top trainer Nonito Donaire Sr. in Ontario, Canada to get his thoughts on this weekend’s “Rumble at the Rama” card featuring his fighters Marvin Sonsona and Ciso Morales. Don’t miss this one, only on FightFan.com!
M: Nonito Sr. thank you for taking the time to check in with us at FightFan.com. Can you tell us how your fighter Marvin Sonsona feels now that has become the WBO super flyweight champion heading in to his fight this Saturday?
NDS: Well I want to thank all the readers on Fight Fan.com for your support. Marvin is still the same fighter now that he’s champion. He hasn’t changed. He’s still very humble and still a young fighter who keeps learning. After winning his title Marvin has continued to work hard in the gym and he continues to learn and grow as a fighter.
IM: What can you tell us about Marvin’s opponent for Saturday night in Alejandro Hernandez?
NDS: Well we have seen Hernandez’s most recent fight and we are very confident we can beat him. We are not taking him lightly but at the same time we believe there’s no way he can beat Marvin Sonsona.
IM: Hernandez has never been knocked down or stopped…I take it you guys will be looking to stop him?
NDS: Well it’s like when we fought Jose ‘Carita’ Lopez… although Hernandez is a different fighter remember that Lopez went down. He was a fighter with a lot of experience and heart which held him to the last round. Hernandez, on the other hand… I think Sonsona will be able to knock this guy out.
IM: Speaking of Jose Lopez… that fight went the full twelve rounds. That was something Sonsona had never experienced before. What did Marvin take away from that experience going all those rounds?
NDS: I think it was actually a good thing Sonsona’s last fight went twelve rounds. Hernandez has good defense which means this fight could very well go twelve rounds especially if he looks to clinch a lot. We have trained very hard to go twelve rounds.
IM: Any predictions for the fight?
NDS: I would say this fight will not go past six rounds.
IM: Can you tell us a bit about Ciso ‘El terrible’ Morales, another bright young prospect from the Philippines? What can we Fight Fans expect to see from him?
NDS: Morales is actually very difficult to hit. He hits hard and he’s undefeated but he will be fighting a tough opponent named Miguel Angel Conzalez Piedras so this fight should be interesting.
IM: You mentioned Morales is hard to hit I take it you guys have been working on his defensive skills?
NDS: Yes that’s why I say he’s hard to hit. He has improved and we’ve worked on his defense. Morales throws more combinations and works the body more often now.
IM: What is your prediction on the Morales vs. Piedras fight?
NDS: We plan on knocking Piedras out. As long as we can land accurate shots Piedras should go down… at least we hope so!
IM: Okay muchas gracias senor Nonito Donaire for taking the time to check in with us at FightFan.com… we wish you all the best!
NDS: Thank you to everybody at Fight Fan and thank you Ivan Montiel. You aren’t related to Fernando Montiel are you? (Laughs)
IM: Yes I am his cousin! (Laughs)
