“The Fight” will happen. But it might be eventually. Probably in May.
I see Floyd Mayweather, Jr. wanting a scheduled 10 – round tuneup fight in January as has been kicked around.
I see Manny Pacquiao with options: 1) Wait for Mayweather in May. 2) Take on Yuri Foreman, the newly – minted World Boxing Association 154 Champion (but at 151) for his eighth title in as many weight divisions.
All the while, the two sides will be negotiating.
But nothing less than an immediate Pacquiao – Mayweather battle will satisfy the now lusting world boxing fans though.
Since Cain vs. Abel I, historically, every big fight seems to have roadblocks along the way but they usually always get made. It’s just going to take some time.
However before we just let all of this energy and momentum go to waste, we can utilize some of it looking back at just a few additional points from Saturday night.
I believe Miguel Cotto made a fine account of himself. I don’t say that just to be a good sportsman after the fact. I believe his left jab was very effective as a weapon. It jolted Pacquiao many times and even occasionally after Cotto was broken down at the end of four rounds.
Manny Pacquiao didn’t seem to have problems when Cotto was forcing him back and into the ropes where he’d move out of harms way. Also Cotto’s greater strength was evident during Pacquaio’s cover up as his entire body was jolted when Cotto cranked power punches. This was one of the things trainer Freddie Roach was concerned about heading into the fight.
Pacquiao fans and media can finally stop bringing up the seven titles in seven different weight divisions record when speaking of their hero. He doesn’t need a crutch anymore.
Pacquiao’s name alone stands along with the greats. The public doesn’t need to be reminded how many or what titles Sugar Ray Robinson had. How many defenses Joe Louis made.
We just know they were the best, like Pacquiao.
Maybe a couple of years from the day Pacquiao retires will be when we really are able to put his career in historical perspective. But its been a great ride so far.
