According to Freddie Roach, a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr would go down as one of the biggest fights in boxing history. Since the days of the heavyweight division reigning supreme over boxing are over with, it has been the lighter divisions that have carried this sport for a decade now. What fight would be bigger than a Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao fight?
A fight between the two would be for boxing supremacy. The pound for pound king title would be settled once and for all. Mayweather fans argue that their man should be pound for pound king. They argue that Floyd has an unblemished record, with victories over De La Hoya, Castillo, Corrales, Judah, and more recently Marquez. Pacquiao fans argue that their man has victories over Barrera (twice), Morales, Marquez, De La Hoya, Hatton, and Diaz. Pacquiao fans argue that Mayweather takes the path of least resistance while their guy has fought the teeth of not only his division, but heavier divisions as well.
One of Roach’s concerns is that even if the two fighters agree to fight, Mayweather would price himself out of the fight, or not agree to a catch weight that makes sense. This of course if happens would be a travesty. This is indeed the fight that most people want to see.
Roach admits that Mayweather is a different monster than anyone that Pacquiao has faced thus far. Mayweather took apart Juan Manuel Marquez rather easily. Pacquiao had trouble with Marquez both times the two had fought, so one could argue that Floyd should handle Pacquiao easily. Roach begs to differ, “Marquez had a lot of trouble making that weight to fight Floyd. Pacquiao is unlike any fighter in our time. He can make weight, and he does it the right way. He also carries his power with him up in weight.”
With all of this said, Manny needs to get past Miguel Cotto. Roach still predicts that this fight will end very early, even as early as the first round via knockout. A Pacquiao destruction over Cotto juices up a Mayweather fight to no end. Why wouldn’t anyone want to see it? Most people would love to see the pound for pound king fight, this writer included.
