Ripley’s Believe It Or Not is a museum which deals in bizarre events and items so strange and unusual that the public might question the claims. When people see an exhibit presented in the museum, they are likely to be looking at something that one would consider impossible and unnatural. Don King and Mike Tyson being back together belong in Ripley’s collection if you ask me. It seems unlikely and far fetched, yet it’s factual and current.
Don King has signed Mike Tyson as part of his donkingtv.com broadcast team. Mike will be part of the commentary for the October 31 “Halloween Thrilla” from the T.I. in Las Vegas. Mike Tyson and Don Kind posed together for pictured and answered a barrage of questions while walking together at the Treasure Island hotel in Las Vegas. Mike Tyson was smiling and raising his hands, looking cheerful and confident with this reunion. Dong King seemed very pleased to have Mike do this, saying: “Oh what a glorious day, my prodigal son has returned. It may be Halloween, but this is no trick. This will be a treat for boxing fans around the world. Mike is more than one of the greatest heavyweight champions in boxing history. He is a boxing historian, and nobody can break a fight down like Iron Mike.”
Of course it is obvious that this is an instant shock to most boxing fans who know the history between the two. They have had an ugly relationship in the past, involving words of hate and non-stop lawsuits. Most of us would have never imagined Mike Tyson working with Don King again, yet here we are, back to square one. It’s not so hard to imagine what drove Mike to accept, most likely being a very impressive monetary offer. More importantly, what can this mean for boxing?
Don King is a man who can make anything happen. He is known for putting together amazing fight cards. He can place many great names on one card and make it work. Maybe, just maybe, there is a greater agenda on King’s mind regarding Mike. I would not be surprised if we saw Tyson in the ring again. I know it’s a terrible idea, and something that most boxing fans dread. Nonetheless, it’s also something that most boxing fans would pay money to see as well as something that would bring excitement to the sport.
Imagine Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield 3. I know that Evander has been in the game without any interruptions, while Mike enjoyed the sedentary lifestyle. Still, a little training and monetary inspiration could get Mike to train and at least look decent.
I may very well be wrong, and maybe this is just a way for Don King to bring more light and interest back into boxing. Don King might want to try and see if Mike would become a permanent commentary for King’s event. After all, Mike Tyson is the best way to advertise and bring people to their TV sets. Let’s see what King has in store for us!
