In what may be a quick night of work, WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero (25-0, 25KOs) officially announced that he will defend his title against Mexican slugger Hector Velazquez (51-13, 35KOs) on December 19 in Caracas, Venezuela.
Velazquez’s claim to fame is his two fights with the Pacquiao brothers. He was stopped by Manny Pacquiao in six rounds in 2005 but beat Bobby Pacquaio by an eleven round disqualification in 2006. It tough to see how the WBC sanctioned this bout as a “title fight.” Velazquez is coming off a loss and dropped two of his last three. He also dropped decisions to Rocky Juarez and Elio Rojas.
“My opponent will be the Hector Velazquez of Mexico. He’s had a good career and some interesting fights. He faced Manny Pacquiao, also his brother Bobby, Rocky Juarez, and a few others. His career has been very interesting. He will not be an easy opponent. Valero said in a press conference. There are some details that need to be ironed out, but the important thing is that he will be the opponent,” Valero told The Record.
