Mayol rival vows victory

THE FORTHCOMING titular defense of Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation minimumweight kingpin Rodel Mayol on January 29 promises to be exciting as Thai challenger Phalangchai Sor Vorapin vowed to go all-out and snatch the Filipino’s belt. The 21-year-old Phalangchai, a native of Bolilom Province in Thailand and now fighting out of the Surapol Gym of Bangkok, also informed that he is fully aware of Mayol’s reputation as a heavy-hitter, but vowed to repulse the champion when they meet in a 12-round war at the Casino Filipino in Para?aque.

The event, promoted by Lope Sarreal Jr. and Stonewall Boxing Gym, is part of Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr.’s sports development program and part of the proceeds will be donated to the coming SEA Games to be held in Manila this November 2005.

“I respect Mayol as a good champion,” said the Thai. “He is undefeated. But I have a job to do, and that is to win and bring back the title and world rankings to Thailand.”

The Mandaue-raised Mayol, who was promised a No. 1 ranking by WBC president Jose Sulaiman during the last WBC Convention, will use this bout as his final preparation for a crack at newly-crowned WBC champ Isaac Bustos of Mexico, who recently dethroned Eagle Kyowa for the title.
