If Jose Sulaiman and his World Boxing Council really want to be involved with Pacquiao vs. Cotto, I say do away with the Diamond Belt and pull Freddy and Manny aside and say “No” to Shaquille O’Neal and all future celebrities and wannabes that want to “do” ringwalks.
We have all had a lot of fun, but its too much already. After Shaq, then everybody and their uncle are going to want a celebrity walk them into fights with their music; into restaurants, movie theaters, Department of Motor Vehicles, libraries, etc.
Today in boxing you have four – round prelim fighters and their “people” at the day before weigh -ins confronting arena management that they must have their eight- minute rap song played and video on or their fighter isn’t fighting, let alone make the 90 – second ring walk.
Oh, and they need two extra meal tickets and “Participant” passes to make sure things run smoothly. Oh, and a couple of hotel room nights and parking passes on the promoter of course. Oh, and pull the green M&M’s out of the candy dish.
It is going to become a “Can you top this” situation.
I see a beautiful Hollywood starlet, and her attorney, announcing on TMZ she’s suing somebody no, everybody: fighter, promoter, casino. announcers, Shaq, everybody because she was promised the ring walk in exchange for an evening of passion by someone she believed was important hanging out in the hotel lobby. And yes, she has the passion on tape.
Sulaiman will then come up with the wisdom that makes him so famous.
“Offer her two ring walks and run scenes of her next movie, in exchange for the incriminating and embarrassing tape and agreement to drop said charges,” Jose might say. It’s similar to a WBC Champion having to make two consecutive mandatory defenses of a vacant title.
That’s how I see it anyway.
Oh, Cleveland and Shaq have a game at home against Utah that night.
