Over the last 6 weeks or so, the WWE has made it a point to mention Floyd Mayweather Jr. In fact, WWE has worked Floyd Mayweather Jr into a major storyline and he’s not even physically there. Apparently, WWE has a hard time getting over Floyd Mayweather Jr.
It’s been a little less than 2 months since Floyd appeared as the guest host of WWE RAW. Although his appearance was very brief, he helped WWE RAW break a 3.9 in the ratings; which has only happen 2 other times this year. But, WWE hasn’t reached those numbers since then. In fact, WWE has been on a slow decline in the ratings ever since the August 24th “Money” Night RAW.
Floyd hasn’t appeared in the WWE since August but he has been recently used in a big storyline between the WWE Tag-Team champions. In effort to split the champs up for the Bragging Rights PPV on Sunday October 25th, WWE had Chris Jericho totally make fun of The Big Show by saying at least he didn’t get knocked out by Floyd Mayweather Jr at WrestleMania 24.
This comment frustrated Big Show to the point that he actually took on his tag-team partner in a match and beat him. In addition to this storyline, WWE mentioned how previous matches that Floyd made during his appearance on RAW had a trickling effect on current matches over the last month or so.
I believe that the biggest reason why WWE continues to bring up the name of Mayweather is 2 fold. The biggest reason I believe is the fact that Floyd continuously says that he wants to be a pro-wrestler. There’s something brewing between Vince and Floyd and it was evident most recently by HHH walking Mayweather out to the ring for his fight against Marquez.
The other reason is that WWE is trying to do everything they can to get the mainstream and casual fans to notice all the names that they had as past hosts. By brining up what Floyd has done, they are trying to capitalize on his recent popularity. Just check Floyd’s PPV buys for the last fight and that’s more than enough to prove he is popular whether you like him or not.
Ultimately, Floyd will be back in the WWE. There’s too much history and too much potential. For now, WWE will just have to cherish the memories.
