Who’s the leader of the pack? There are a lot of professional boxers out there, big fighters, little fighters, medium size fighters, old fighter, young fighters, good fighters, bad fighters, but there is only one fighter that leads the pack.
Recently in an interview with www.8countnews.com, HBO’s Harold Lederman went on the record and stated that Floyd Mayweather Jr in his victory over Juan Manuel Marquez has retaken the pound for pound king title. Really?
How is it possible that a guy that has been out of action for two years can come back, fight a smaller guy in Marquez and just retake the pound for pound king title? Be that as it may, this writers loves Harold Lederman, he’s a gentleman, a class act, and a joy to talk boxing with. With that said, Lederman has got this one wrong.
Manny Pacquiao systematically dismantled one by one every Mexican elite fighter put in his path. The path to the top is now littered with beat up legends (compliments Pacquiao) named, Morales, Barrera and De La Hoya. On down the path a few miles you’ll find scattered about a few other Pacquiao victims named, Oscar Larios, David Diaz, and Jorge Solis. More recently Pacman silenced thousands of UK fans by crushing Ricky Hatton. Notice that I did not add Juan Manuel Marquez’ name on this list? Look, I know this will not sit well with a lot of Pacquiao fans, but Marquez did not get his ass kicked by Pacquiao. Yes, Manny got the win the second time that they fought, and a draw the first time they fought. This just does not qualify Marquez to be in the same category as Pacquiao’s other victims.
So, Mayweather is the pound for pound king? Not hardly, not yet. Mayweather has not earned this distinction as of yet. He is going to have to take it back if he wants it. There are only a few ways that he can get it back, and that is to fight Manny and win it back in victory. The other way is for Manny to lose to Cotto, and Mayweather wins his next fight. Hopefully we’ll see Pacquiao vs Mayweather in the not so far future.
The leader of the PAC is clearly Pacquiao. When you look at the level of competition that each man has faced throughout their career, it’s really a no brainer. Look at the fallen challengers that have faced each man. The names that Pacquiao has on his resume are much more impressive than the names that are on Mayweather’s resume.
Pacquiao takes on Miguel Cotto next. Cotto is a big strong welterweight that can pop. If Manny Pacquiao carves him up like a roasted turkey like he has to the others in his previous fights, HBO will be singing and dancing on the streets. A win over Cotto gets the juices flowing for the big Mayweather Jr vs Manny Pacquiao fight. This would be a HUGE ppv event, probably earning each guy up to 20 million dollars. Mayweather Jr would have his opportunity once and for all to take the pound for pound king title back. Until that happens, guess what? Manny Pacquiao is the leader of the PAC.
