Bacolod pugs ready for `Triple Assault’

Homegrown boxing talents who aspire to be the next Manny Pacquiao of Philippine boxing will be seeing action in the “Triple Assault” presentation on Oct. 10 at the PAGCOR Bacolod Casino Filipino amphitheater, a press release from the Guanzon Stable said.

The boxers, who are on the last leg of their training, belong to the Guanzon Stable of Rev. Henry Guanzon.

In preparation for the fight night, the boxers underwent high altitude training which includes regular jogging to the Mambucal Mountain Resort and back early in the morning daily.

The pack is bannered by brothers JanJan Guanzon, RhayRhay Guanzon and Art “El Matador” Villanueva who are also into intensive gym workouts daily as part of their training regimen, Guanzon said in the press release.

“They will be on a strict diet of vegetables and fruits a week before their actual fight that’s why it won’t be much trouble for them to hit the desired weight before the actual fight date,” Guanzon also said.

Villanueva, Negros Occidental’s top undefeated flyweight, is scheduled to take on Fabio Marfa, the No. 1 undefeated flyweight contender of the Philippines in a 10-rounder (112 lbs.), while JanJan Guanzon, Negros Occidental’s undefeated featherweight, tangles against “the pride of Bislig City” Joseph Mateo in a 6-round 126 lbs. clash; even as RhayRhay “D Striker” pits skills with “D Pride of Torento City” Jun Grumo in another 6-rounder in the 112 lbs. division.

Expected to watch the bouts from the ringside is World boxing Organization minimumweight titlist champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, who is in town enjoying a much-needed rest.

The Negrense boxers featured in the “Triple Assault” also polished their skills under the supervision of Negros Amateur Boxing Association headed by Games and Amusement Board commissioner Juan Ramon “Monju” Guanzon, the press release said.*
