Suico wants Barrera

Amid reports that WBC super-featherweight king Marco Antonio Barrera will be facing IBF titleholder Robbie Peden sometime in September, Filipino Randy Suico yesterday took a much-needed boost in his quest to challenge Barrera within this year.

Yesterday, reports from Mexico revealed that the winner of today’s battle between WBC No. 4 Carlos Hernandez and No. 5 Jesus Chavez will move on to face Erik Morales sometime in September for the latter’s WBC International crown, and not Barrera as earlier planned.

Earlier, Suico’s handlers had voiced out apprehension that the Hernandez-Chavez winner might be installed by the WBC as the next challenger to Barrera, prompting the No. 3 Suico to ask the WBC not to allow the winner of the fight to move above him in the rankings.

The WBC ruling to have the winner of the Hernandez-Chavez battle move on to challenge Morales came as no surprise, as Suico has remained loyal to the WBC and has fought well under the organization’s banner as an OPBF champ.

” I want Barrera next with his WBC title at stake. I have shown I am ready to face the Mexican legend. I hear that ex-champs Jesus Chavez and Carlos Hernandez will square off in a ballyhooed eliminator. But the winner should never come over me as the official challenger, as I have regularly defended my belt of the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation, which is under the WBC, and have a better record than Chavez and Hernandez,” Suico said right after defending his OPBF title last April 27 against Thai Muangfahlek Kiatwichien.

Suico, holding a 23-1, 20 KO’s record, is ranked no. 3 by the WBC behind no. 2 Manny Pacquiao and no. 1 Erik Morales.
