Since he started fighting as a pro in 1989, Gerry Pe?alosa has never experienced such embarrassment as yesterday.
The former Worl Boxing Council super-flyweight champion, in a comeback bid, went to the Florida Athletic Commission to appear during the official weigh-in session for a fight against the 5-foot-11 Columbian Reynaldo Hurtado Arendo today at the Club Cinema, Pompano Beach in Florida.
But to his dismay, he was shooed away by the officials since he was not officially included in the list of boxers who are scheduled to appear in the card.
Pe?alosa trained hard for the fight but failed to get the contract promised him by the controversial Murad Muhammad, the former promoter of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.
The Cebuano former world champion is currently based in Miami training under the watchful eyes of Buddy McGirt, along with fellow Cebuano Z Gorres.
According to reports, Muhammad did not show up yesterday in the card presented by Elite Promotions.
“I learned that when Gerry went to the weigh-in, he was asked why he was there when he had no fight. There was no contract.
This is embarrassing,” said Cebu boxing patron and Pe?alosa’s former mentor Antonio Aldeguer in a text message.
“I pity Gerry Pe?alosa. For sure he will come back here in the country the soonest possible time,” said Aldeguer.
