Sure he’s smaller in size, frame, weight, etc… Yes he’s old (36) and older by any stretch. Not even the great Pacquiao has beaten him convincingly in two attempts.
But he’s still standing and on Saturday night he puts together a Hall of Fame worthy performance that makes everybody go to the bathroom and get a small cup to pee in.
Juan Manual Marquez could have taken any number of other fights for big enough money other than this one. He could have taken any other fight and not be forced to battle a naturally bigger man.
Marquez has a secret! Marquez has a secret! He knows something. He saw a facial expression on young Floyd, beyond all his bravado B.S. that told him he can beat this guy. Why else put the entire career on the line?
Just like Max Schmeling saw something, a weakness perhaps, in the young and undefeated Joe Louis many years ago, Marquez is calling his shot and putting it all on the line against the unbeaten Mayweather.
Of course Pacquiao fans will be upset temporarily that Manny doesn’t get the Super Fight with Floyd, but maybe they dodge a huge bullet.
I’m not sure, but I believe the 21 -month long layoff has something to do with it. Fighters at this level take pride in their confidence and poker faces. Floyd must have blown it big time and Marquez is going to make him pay.
If I’m right, than this really screws up the plans of Bob Arum and Manny Pacquiao. Well, Arum can fend for himself. Let’s talk about Pacquiao.
He is then left with? Mosley? A third fight with Marquez? Maybe an immediate rematch with Cotto? Assuming of course he beats him November 14. Pacquiao really needs Mayweather to win, and win big Saturday night.
This business makes for some strange bed fellows.
