WORLD Boxing Council and World Boxing Association super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan has shown interest in a unification bout with newly-crowned World Boxing Organization super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona.
However, Sonsona’s promoter, Sammy Gello-ani, has no plans of pitting the 19-year-old world titleholder against the veteran Armenian slugger.
Gello-ani reacted to recent reports saying the 33-year-old decorated fighter Darchinyan was targeting a unification battle with the young Sonsona. Gello-ani disapproves because he believes that it is still too early for his ward to face a dangerous and more experienced boxer like Darchinyan.
“We are not after Darchinyan’s belt. We have no plans of fighting him. He is a new world champion. He is still young and he is not that experienced yet,” Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Instead of a fight with Darchinyan, Gello-ani believes the best thing for Sonsona is to defend his belt against mandatory opponents.
Sonsona won the WBO super flyweight belt last Sunday in Canada via a unanimous decision over Puerto Rican Jose Lopez.
“He was impressive. It was very convincing. It was unbelievable,” said Gello-ani of Sonsona’s victory over the aging Lopez.
Gello-ani said that Sonsona will be defending his title on Nov. 21 in Canada.
“He will stay at the 115-pound division and stay there for two to three fights before moving up. It all depends on his development,” said Gello-ani.
Sonsona, along with Gello-ani, trainer Jun Agrabio and WBO Asia-Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo, will be arriving in Cebu City from Manila at 2 p.m. today.
