RSR Mail Bag May 16, 2005

This week we have readers ringing in with their questions about boxing websites, the upcoming Tyson fight, advice on doing interviews, Manny Pacquiao, advice on getting a young child into boxing, tape collecting, Corrales Vs Castillo fight, James Toney and even George being asked the famous Bill Clinton question that was posed to him on MTV a few years back, Boxer or Briefs?

Brad,

I am really impressed with the depth of articles your guys put out on a daily basis. You never seem to get into this internet wars like other sites and you have a diehard reader in me. Thanks for staying positive.

Dean Johnson

Dean,

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, other sites go back and forth with the insults, but at RSR, it’s about the fighters not the boxing website wars. There is not one member on this great team who doesn’t respect the fighters and love the sport of boxing. When we hear from our readers such as you, it makes it all worth it to us.

“Bad” Brad,

Does this guy McBride have a chance against Mike Tyson?

Robert Dennision

Robert,

Any fighter has a chance at heavyweight to land a bomb and get another heavyweight out of there. However, McBride from what I have seen, is slow, doesn’t punch that hard and is weak on defense. Even a Mike Tyson at this stage should have him out of there in two rounds. If Mike can’t get past him, then he needs to call it a day and ride off into the sunset pursuing other ways to make money.

“Bad” Brad,

Doing interviews as you have done now for many years, how can I break into doing them as well and what advice can you offer?

Troy J.

Troy,

First thing, is research your potential interview. Hopefully you have seen them fight and if not, try to get tape on them. Ask them articulate questions and when they talk, shut up and listen. The interview is not about the person doing it, but about the person they are doing it with. The late Johnny Carson by far, was the best interviewer I have ever seen in my lifetime without any doubt. He would ask a question and unlike so many out there today, he shut up and let his guest answer or tell the story to the end. That is what invokes great answers from the person you have in front of you.

In addition, never take what someone says out of context because that happens so many times in my profession and fighters lose respect for you when you do that.

“Bad” Brad,

I want to get my ten year old son into boxing, but not sure how to start since we live in a small town in Louisiana. Can you offer and advice?

Josh

Josh,

Of course first start out in your phonebook for gyms or even fitness centers sometimes have boxing gyms. If you come up empty there, try your local police station who may have a Police Athletic League (PAL) if they still exist. Even the YMCA may have something as well. Boxing is a great sport to get a young man into because it builds self-esteem along with getting him in shape at young age. Best of luck to you and your son.

George,

I was wondering if you could help me with something. I am doing research on boxing champions through the years and their height and reach measurements. Fidel Bassa is one fighter that I’m missing. I was wondering if you might have come across some height information and maybe reach for Bassa while you researched him for the article. I’ve checked BoxRec, Ring Record Book, San Antonio newspapers surrounding the Medel fight, etc and have been unable to come up with this information. Maybe some televised fights with a Tale of a Tape given, etc. Any help would be much appreciated and valuable to my list.

Thank you, Deepak

Well, Deepak quite frankly, I have five or six fights on Fidel Bassa myself, but I’m strapped for time to go looking through all of them to see if an announcer is going to mount a reach and height in there or not. I’m going to do one up. Please search the Spanish newspapers if you know the tongue, or for anyone who does happen to read the language well enough to look it up so that they can translate it for you need be.

Try the newspaper sites like Periodico El Mundo at www.elmundo.com or Cali http://elpais-cali.terra.com.co/pasisonline/ For Bogot? it’s simply http://eltiempo.terra.com.co/ Look up the archives, story lines of the writer who wrote the article on Bassa…and email to ask them about the information that you just passed on.

After your research has been fulfilled and accomplished, kindly send an email to our esteemed colleague here at RSR, Romy, our correspondent from Italy who works Box Rec and bring along your results from your own search. He then will check to see if they’re in fact accurate enough to place, or whether there’s any disparities inside of the find or not. Good luck, and happy hunting.

George,

After that great war between Corrales and Castillo, where do both go next?

Champ

Hopefully up. What can anyone say to beat what transpired last May 7th other than legitimate dynasty time, and place that in a capsule. We may be looking at an encore performance from what these two displayed inside of my tarot cards Champ.

George,

Could you see Manny Pacquiao moving up to lightweight and being competitive against Diego Corrales?

Jerry

I can see Manny exactly where he is, and that’s looking better than Juan Manuel Marquez last looked fighting Victor Polo. I’ve got to tell you that aired fight of his downed his market value considerably, and I should have known from any of us at the conference presser asking anything beyond reproach. Marquez may be the next Pacquiao assignment, and judging from how he looked last, 130 doesn’t look so favorable for me to pick him against Pacquiao.

If you had to pick anyone moving up, it’ll be Corrales to 140. Now there’s a fight. Miguel Cotto Vs Diego Corrales. Manny wouldn’t move up too many weights when he doesn’t have to Jerry.

George,

Boxers or Briefs?

Teddy

Neither. Just give me the spikes and some good old gladiators wear every time like in the Roman days. Besides, those things should be banned anyway, but more importantly they’re much too constricting for me to even have in my neck of the woods Teddy. Scouts honor.

George,

What is your take on this big mess with James Toney now?

Phil

Well, Phil formed substances were found, which mixed medicines could produce; thus was discovered in Toney’s system. However I don’t buy any excuses about not knowing it would’ve given those kinds of results. Seems to me to be a rather weak defense for a stall, or at best keeping a doctor in the dark regarding a WBA regulatory concerned, it’s a bit like being treachery trodden so as to that he doesn’t have to know a thing.

Proving that horses do run well with blinders on.

What makes it all appear even more believable for James is that he admitted he only could muster five and a half weeks training, while he had to keep some of that weight on to match his girt against John Ruiz.

If the WBA wanted to throw the book at him, that tape of Toney speaking with Larry Merchant all but closed condemnation to newer heights; not to mention hopefully that he wasn’t brandishing what looked like a Havana cigar on the network television HBO cameras.

George,

How long will it take Manny Pacquiao to heal from his bad cut and do you see him fighting Barrerra or Morales again?

Jesse

I’m no cut man Jesse to really tell you. That’s up to his doctor to okay. Emotionally I think Manny could fight just ASAP as of this writing, but he’s smarter for following advise from his medical team. I actually do see Pacquiao fighting at least one of these you mentioned, but I think it wiser to keep that under my hat for right now. One never knows what The Pac-Man has in mind, particularly not finding it appealing enough for him to get two featherweight championship belts in just one bite.

Note: When you send in your question, specify who you would like to answer it or they will be split up between George and I. Questions will be taken throughout the week and the cut off is Saturday evening. If you don’t make the cutoff, look for your question to be answered the following week. Send all questions to: [email protected]
