Ivan ‘LatinoPorVida’ Montiel is live on location in Ontario, Canada and caught up with defending WBO junior bantamweight champion Jose Lopez who fights rising prospect Marvin Sonsona Friday night at Casino Rama!
FF: Hello Jose, thank you for taking the time to talk with the Fight Fans at FightFan.com. Can you give us your thoughts on Marvin Sonsona who you defend your title against this Friday night in Canada?
JL: I think he’s a good strong young fighter with a lot of hunger and he’s hoping to take my title to the Philippines. But I have much more experience than he does. I am in good condition and I truly believe this fight won’t go the distance… but if it does I am well prepared to go the twelve rounds.
FF: Do you respect Sonsona’s power?
JL: Every fighter has power, I’ve fought many hard hitters but that is no problem. I am sure I can figure him out just as long as I don’t get hit dead on I believe I will outbox this kid.
FF: Tell us how prepared you are for this fight…
JL: I feel great I’ve been running and going to the gym everyday. I am ready.
Now let me ask you this question Mr. Ivan Montiel… Are you related to Fernando Montiel by any chance?
FF: I am his cousin. Just Kidding. (shared laugh)
Tell me Jose, do you feel this fight comes down to experience vs. youth and as such you have the advantage?
JL: Well if we are talking about power I have 32 knockouts. So we shall see how this kid reacts once we get in the ring. I have many weapons that I am sure he hasn’t seen before. I’ve seen so many types of fighters I just don’t see this fight going the distance.
FF: Do you think Sonsona is too young to be fighting for a world title?
JL: To fight for a world title is very important for any fighter. I won’t let him beat me. I am going to beat him… you just watch.
FF: What does your nickname ‘Carita’ stand for?
JL: Carita… well I get that from always being happy. I am always smiling!
FF: Off topic what do you think of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight?
JL: It’s going to be a great fight. I believe Mayweather is great and if the same Mayweather as always shows up then I believe he will beat Marquez. Floyd is such a smart fighter.
FF: Since your Puerto Rican I have to ask you this question: Cotto or Pacquiao?
JL: Cotto!
