This Friday, 4th of September from the Rama Casino in Ontario Canada, Jose ?Carita? Lopez of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico will be making the first defense of his WBO Superflyweight title before the up and coming Filipino Marvin Sonsona. In Sonsona, Lopez will be facing a young hungry fighter with a professional record of 13-0 with 12 Kos. However, with a total of 47 fights and a record of 38-7-2 with 32 Kos, Lopez believes that his experience and strength will be his keys to victory.
?What we?ve been able to see of him from videos in Youtube is that he?s young, only 19, a southpaw, a little taller then me at 5 feet 7 inches and slim?, Lopez would say. ?He?s Filipino and has 12 Kos in 13 fights, so he has to have a strong punch. But I believe that with my superior strength I will be able to impose my will on him. He?s a very technical fighter, moves very well in the ring, so I will have to look for him and I believe I will be to overmatch him due to my superior strength. That?s going to be one of my keys to victory and of course my experience. He?s never been past five rounds, so we will have to see how he responds as the rounds go by.?
It was the age of 36 and in his sixth attempt at a world title that Lopez was finally able to become a world champion this past 28th of March in Puerto Rico by beating Pramuansak Posuwan via unanimous decision. After many years in the sport, Lopez enters this fight with greater focus and determination in order to retain the title he worked so hard to attain.
?I?m coming to this fight a different fighter. After working so hard to gain this title, I?m hungry to defend it and show the world who Carita is.?
TV BROADCAST Boxing fans in Puerto Rico will be able to watch the fight live exclusive through channel 161 on DIRECTTV at 8PM this Friday. Additionally ?DIRECTTV will be showing Lopez? last bout where he won his world title over Posuwan starting at 7pm.
As of yet there is no word of a live television broadcast in the United States. If any information becomes available we will be sure to inform all our readers via our page. Perhaps some Filipino or Puerto Rican in the island we?ll make the fight available via more modern means. THE NEW RIVALRY When Lopez and Marvin Sonsona step into the ring this Friday it will be the third time this year that fighters from the Philippines and Puerto Rico face off in world title fights. This past 25th of April WBO junior featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez came away with technical knock out victory over Gerry Penalosa while Ivan Calderon and Rodel Mayol had a draw when they faced off on the 13th of June. We?ll see if Sonsona can bring a victory to the Philippines to tie things up for the year.
A week later on the 12th of September Ivan Calderon and Rodel Mayol will meet once again and then on the 14th of November Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao will be facing off in a highly anticipated match continuing what is slowly growing into the newest rivalry in boxing.
