Nonito Donaire captured the interim WBA super flyweight title moments ago in Las Vegas with a hard fought unanimous decision victory over Rafael Concepcion. Donaire stalked Concepcion in the opening round and used a brilliant counter left hook any time Concepcion tried to attack showing once again why he is one of the best examples of a boxer/puncher in he sport with his calculated attack. In Round 2 Concepcion landed a few very hard shots but Donaire appeared to take them well. Donaire went back to boxing in the third and when he slowed things down, he controlled the action. In the middle rounds the fact that Concepcion weighed in two divisions above Donaire on Friday started to come in to play. He absorbed Donaire’s punches well and his hands carried a great deal of power. He rocked Donaire in the middle rounds, but the Pinoy fighter boxed and moved well. Donaire fell into the rhythm of boxing with his hands low while moving away. Donaire dug deep in the championship rounds and came out with a big effort in Rounds 11 and 12 to close the show. Despite a determined effort from an inflated Concepcion, Donaire managed to land twice the amount of power punches when all was said and done. After twelve rounds all three judges saw the fight in Donaire’s favor by scores of 117-111, 115-113 and 116-112.
