Just got a hot-tip, admittedly second hand, from Las Vegas that Rafael Concepcion weighed 119 pounds at mid-morning Friday, with five hours to go before the official weigh-in for his Saturday title fight with Nonito Donaire Jr.
The weight limit for the WBA interim super-flyweight title fight in Las Vegas is 115 pounds, and the official weigh-in is set for 2 p.m. (PDT) .
It’s probable the fight will take place and that Donaire can win the belt, even if Concepcion doesn’t make weight. But the situation casts a pall on a matchup that looked a bit sketchy in the first place. Concepcion (13-3-1, 8 knockouts) is barely a credible opponent for Donaire (21-1, 14 knockouts), who is ranked No. 7 in The Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound ratings and has abdicated the IBF flyweight title to move up in weight class.
