If this were a fight, they would have to stop it. Seriously. The World Boxing Council in Mexico City wouldn’t realize it if the World Boxing Organization of Puerto Rico went out of business.
The WBC is a big German Shepard, while the WBO is an irritating flea. Maybe the WBC instigated this through Team Cotto because fingerprints are everywhere.
But maybe it was the restlessness of Team Pacquiao while promoter Bob Arum vacationed rather than acting as a servant. Team Pacquiao might not know what Arum actually does. I mean, the last promoter of note on the Pacquiao resume was Murad Muhammad.
An old Jewish saying I remember goes something like this: “The young hunting dog runs faster, but the older faithful dog knows the trail.”
Meaning, don’t mess with Jose Sulaiman, Bob Arum or an also 78 year-old Don King. These guys not only know their respective businesses, but they created them to some extent. Not only were these three there first, they were smarter and worked harder than anyone else.
The only problems these men ever have are when they have to deal with the sanctioning groups – and for some reason they don’t think straight.
Sometimes a belt is worth only $5 as Arum recently said. However sometimes it’s worth $100,000 and there are no refunds.
I know if they made a reality TV show about this belt battle it would be better than the actual fight between Pacquiao vs. Cotto may turn out.
Pacquiao doesn’t want to strip Cotto of the WBO Welterweight belt but I think he has to if Arum actually entertains this new WBC Diamond Belt idea being part of the promotion.
WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel is a younger man, an educated lawyer, and he might have shot himself in the foot on Cotto vs. Pacquiao, but if given a second chance to match wits with either Sulaiman or Arum, I’d put my money on Valcarcel. I’m talking serious revenge here.
