WBO super flyweight champion Jose Lopez (39-7-2, 32KOs) is training like never before. He faces the man many are calling the new superstar of the Philippines, Marvin Sonsona (13-0, 12KOs), on September 4 at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada. Lopez is 37-years-old, while Sonsona is a 19-year-old knockout artist on the rise.
“I expect that my body will not betray me. I have always been dedicated to my training and never I’ve never had problems with the weight. Sonsona is another stone in my path,” Lopez said to Primera Hora.
The veteran is working with WBO junior flyweight champion Ivan Calderon in the gym. Calderon is preparing for his September 12 rematch with Filipino fighter Rodel Mayol. Lopez is in shape, weighing in at 123.5 of a maximum allowed weight of 132 by the boxing commission in Puerto Rico.
“I know that Sonsona is strong and young, but we will see who will get respect when the bell sounds,” Lopez said.
