It’s been two months since my first and last mail bag article and I’ve gotten a few requests from you guys to respond to your e-mail questions and comments so I took this time to address my rapidly growing mail box.

Been reading your columns from the first day I saw my first and I must say you are one of my favorite sports writers. I have a question about Pacquiao and Cotto. Do you really think the 2 pounds will make a difference and will Cotto be dehydrated? I don’t see two pounds as a big issue at all, and I’m wondering if Pacquiao will be too small for Cotto. Keep writing man! I always look forward to your articles.

Thanks for following my column and appreciating what I do. As for your question, I think Pacquiao’s heart will make up for whatever size advantage Cotto has. Cotto definitely has the physical edge and will be stronger than anyone Pac has ever faced before, but Pacquiao grew up in a tough environment and started boxing when he couldn’t even make the minimum weight. It was documented in HBO when he even said he had to put weights in his pockets during weigh-ins just so he can fight. The bigger question is the training and Pacquiao’s other activities. He will be running for politics, making movies and TV shows in the Philippines and will also have to change up his training regimen due to the new US taxation rules. I wonder how all those factors will affect Pacquiao and whether we will see him 100% come fight night. – D

I hope you’re well. I’m glad that a Filipino design the boxing shoes that our very own Filipino Flash will wear on his fight with Concepcion . Nonito is my best Filipino fighter today, skills wise and style wise. I’m from Cebu but I missed to meet him while hew was training here for his fight against Maldonado. Nonetheless, through trainer Rey Caitum, we were able to have him autographed our home-made DVD compilation of some of his best fights. Please extend our regards to him the next time you meet him or during your interview.
On a separate note, do you know if Everlast makes more pairs of the shoes you’ve designed and if this will be out commercially? I’m boxing myself for fitness and for the love of sports and hope to wear one of those in my training and sparring. It’s unfortunate that we can’t still find boxing shoes here in stores in Cebu .

Well I haven’t spoken to Everlast yet but I’ve gotten interest from some companies. I don’t know if I would want to do it since designing and customizing a pair of shoes is a full-time job in itself. I used to do it a few years ago but now I just do it as a hobby or when somebody requests it and wants it bad enough. I don’t mind if it’s just straight up designing though and they can manufacture it.

I haven’t seen Melligen’s opponent and Bernabe will be in for a tough time. I think Nonito will win easily against Rafa Concepcion though. I’ve heard great things about Melligen though. If any of those reports are half true, he should have no problem winning via UD as he is a boxer more than anything. I heard he holds his own every time he spars with Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the Mayweather gym over there and was just toying with Marcos Maidana before he beat Victor Ortiz. Bernabe is determined and hardworking. Luevano though is seasoned and crafty. If it goes the distance, Bernabe will have a tough time winning a decision but if he can knock down Luevano which I think he can do, then he’ll be a world champ on Aug. 15. – D

Pakaplog – According to some Pinoy brothers, for Nonito to be as great as Pacquiao – he should be more agressive and exciting and not just a counterpuncher. He should be a calculated brawler like Pacquiao. Although he’s outspoken, he should project an image of being humble. It’s good also if he can reconcile with his Dad and have the sit at ringside during Pinoy Power 2 fight.
Nonito is his own guy. You either love him or you don’t. I actually think its refreshing. I do understand where you are coming from but at the end of the day I think it’s also a matter of timing. Pacquiao is definitely a once in a lifetime talent and you can say he also benifitted from great timing by having some of the best ever in the divisions he fought in like Barrera and Morales. If Nonito keeps winning and once all these big named fighters agree to fight him, he’ll be alright. – D

All I can say is we should just keep it real and be true to ourselves. Just do what you do best and stay positive. A lot of people spend their time hating and finding fault in other people instead of investing in what they can do to further themselves in life.
