CEBU-based Marvin Sonsona is ready for the biggest challenge of his career as he takes on World Boxing Organization super flyweight Jose Lopez on Sept. 4 at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.
“He is very calm. He feels no pressure on him and he isn’t nervous for this fight but excited. He is ready and he has a very high confidence level,” Sammy Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday.
Sonsona, 19, is currently training at the Yraola Gym in Quezon City, while waiting for his visa.
The young boxer, who is from Gen. Santos City like Manny Pacquiao, is also trying to be a world champion at 19, the same age Pacquiao won his first title.
He is 13-0 with 12 KOs, while Lopez is a veteran of 46 fights, winning 39, including 32 by KOs.
Sonsona is training with his two coaches Jun Agrabio and Nonito Donaire Sr.
“We are letting him train in Manila because of the accessibility. We can pull him out anytime if he needs to process his visa,” said Gello-ani.
Gello-ani said Sonsona is tentatively scheduled to live for Canada on Aug. 16 and he will continue his training there.
Gello-ani said that Sonsona’s training is running smoothly and that he has been sparring for 12 rounds against different in-house fighters from different weight categories every other day.
Gello-ani is planning to have Sonsona train in Canada for two weeks.
Sonsona will be sparring for five sessions with former world titlist Steve Molitor, who is also scheduled to fight on the same fight card.
The promoter believes that the same-day weigh-in, which is a rule in the boxing commission of Canada, would be a huge advantage to Sonsona because the young Filipino warrior can easily make the weight because of his youth.
At 37, Lopez might have difficulty making the weight.
