Soul singer Edwin Starr was wrong when he sang, “War…what is it good for, absolutely nothing!”
War between boxing promoters at least provides some amusement for one and all.
Yeah, say it, say it again because, although peace broke out for a short while between Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and archrival Bob Arum’s Top Rank outfit, it’s full scale war once again.
Maybe Oscar’s totally coincidental Puerto Rico round of golf with Top Rank chattel ticked Uncle Bob but the peacenik has reverted to form as a warmonger.
Arum has slated Miguel Cotto-Manny Pacquiao press conferences for Sept. 9 in Los Angeles, the following day in New York and on Sept. 12 in Puerto Rico.
Arum then made some mumbo jumbo comment about how those dates were chosen so as to not interfere with Golden Boy’s fight week schedule for their Sept. 19 Juan Manuel Marquez-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight.
Come on, Bobster, you think we can’t see through that smoke screen?
Basically, what the 78 in December Arum is doing is whacking the publicity plans of the Goldens in the crucial week before fight week.
The worse Marquez-Mayweather does, the better the bargaining position that Arum and Pacman will be in as far as cutting up the jumbo jackpot for the inevitable Pacman-Pretty Boy Floyd megabout.
Truth be told, Arum is still seething about how the Goldens went behind his back and announced Marquez-Mayweather on the morning of the Ricky Hatton-Pacquiao co-promotion between them.
Arum did not have a clue that his rivals would hold a presser to announce that fight, which was then scheduled for July 18, on the morning of May 2.
Common courtesy would have called for Richard Schaefer to notify Arum of that press conference but no one from GBP said a word about it.
I guess common courtesy is not so common among landsharks.
Now tell me about that new fight promoters association and how they’re going to work together for mutual interest.
That would be a joke if it was funny.
Funny, no, but amusing, yes.
Let the bombastic, fantastic bombing begin!
Never forget this: when fight promoters rumble, the terrorists cannot win.
