IF ALA star AJ Banal can’t get a fight in the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez bout on Sept. 19, the Cebuano star can get another fight in the Philippines.
ALA Promotions has put up a backup fight for Banal this September to keep him busy should his US fight fail to push through.
“We’re plotting a plan for him to fight here in September,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
ALA Promotions still hasn’t heard from GBP if Banal is included in the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight.
Banal was supposed to fight in the card in its original July 18 schedule but the event was moved after Mayweather got injured.
ALA Promotions is planning to have Banal fight either in Cebu City or Manila this September.
Michael Domingo, Jason Pagara and the highly-rated Milan Melino will also be included in the same card.
Banal is presently gearing up for a six-round tune-up fight against an unnamed opponent on Aug. 1 in Oaxaca, Mexico. He will be in the undercard of the world title defense of fellow ALA fighter and World Boxing Organization mini-flyweight titlist Donnie Nietes against interim champion Manuel Vargas.
Nietes is confident of his chances of bringing the title back in the Philippines in his second title defense in Mexico despite the odds against him.
“Donnie’s doing well in training. He feels so good and he’s ready to go. It would be a tough fight for Donnie but he is very well-conditioned for his fight with Vargas,” said Aldeguer.
