What was said?
Ali Shakoor here, live from the post-fight press conference of Agbeko vs. Darchinyan. Darchinyan was upset by the champion in a close unanimous decision.
Don King started out by talking about the Michael Jackson death for about 10-15 minutes and pontificating about slavery, race, MJ, and what he brought to the world. He also mentions the most recent boxing tragedies involving Arguello and Gatti. Don King is happy that we had a great night of boxing, and he introduces his co-promoter, “fat friend” Gary Shaw.
Gary Shaw: He talks about what a great night of boxing action we had, particularly mentioning the Cunningham v. Braithwaite fight. He talks about how good Demarco looked in his fight and makes fun of Adjaho for not getting up. Gary Shaw introduces lightweight contender, Yonny Perez, who says that he’s interested in soon fighting for a title. Gary Shaw says that Vic Darchinyan will be out shortly, but he’s getting stitches. He blames the cuts on “headbutts”, and says that they’re undecided about the next move. It could be a move up to 122, but they hope for a rematch with Agbeko. Next, Nate Campbell is on the stage.
Nate Campbell: He says he appreciates Bradley’s trash talk, but he’s old school, will take off the “kid gloves”, put on his work shoes, and tear that ass up.
Here comes the champ, Joseph Agbeko.
Agbeko: Thanks Don King, his promoter and “father”. Thanks fans and friends all over world, including, NY and Ghana. He says that the win may seem like a shock to a lot of people but not a shock to himself. He respects Vic as a fighter, but says that Vic is now changed from “Raging Bull” to “Raging /Bullshit”, and expects an amendment to the name. This is his time to shine, and he will be beat whoever is ever put in the ring with him.
Next Don King introduces, Ivan Kirpa. Says Putin sent him to him, and says he’s from Russian with love, and calls him Ivan the Terrible.
Ivan Kirpa: Thanks to everybody and Don King. Will go with Don King and Nicolai Valuev to meet Putin. He’s ready for the next level.
Don King believes Kipra will be a champion and talks about the United Nations landscape of boxing. He wants to bring Nicolai Valuev back to the U.S., and calls him a gentle giant. Next he introduces, Steve USS Cunningham.
Steve Cunningham: Thanks god. Thanks his new trainer Nazim Richardson, and says he plans on soon becoming a champion again. Gives major props to his sparring partner, “Bigfoot” for giving such good looks. He gives props to Braithwaite, but proclaims himself the best cruiserweight in the world.
Don King closes by thanking everybody for a great event, and promising future big nights of boxing.
Bummer, Vic Darchinyan isn’t coming out. The press conference is over.
Well, it was an exciting main event. I had Agbeko winning 7 rounds to 4 with 1 even. The official scorecard was 114-113 twice, and one judge had it 116-111. I’ll write more about this exciting night of boxing in the coming days.
