The Pacquiao-Mayweather match remains to be the most anticipated fight today. For the Pacquiao-Mayweather match to happen early next year, both fighters must win over their respective opponents.
Pacquiao is expected to sign up with Cotto for their November 14 fight while Mayweather will face Juan Manuel Marquez on September 19. 2009.
Promoter Bob Arum could be setting the stage for a Pacquiao-Mayweather match next year. Other than the money consideration for staging a Pacquiao-Cotto fight, Arum knows that Cotto is an easy take for the pound for pound king. As Oscar de la Hoya said in his interview with a reporter yesterday, Arum is protecting Pacquiao by picking on Cotto instead of Shane Mosley. De la Hoya thinks that Mosley is the better fighter and if he defeats Pacquiao, there is a lesser chance for a Pacquiao-Mayweather match early next year.
Mayweather must likewise beat Juan Manuel Marquez in their encounter on September 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. A win over Marquez will give Mayweather more credibility to face the Filipino boxing superstar.
Pacquiao has stated earlier that he is looking at two more major fights before finally retiring from boxing. After his bout with Cotto he may just take on Mayweather for his last and final fight before hanging is gloves for good.
