Gamboa-Lopez may sizzle like Zarate-Zamora did

Take two exciting young talents whose punches are explosive.

Add in that they are both undefeated.

Then, for some added salsa picante, sprinkle in that one is Puerto Rican and the other is Cuban.

Taken all together, you have a blockbuster fight for 2010, Yuriorkis Gamboa against WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez.

Now that Bob Arum has both young stars under his promotional aegis, he plans on juicing up the eventual matchup which could be the best fight between two unbeatens dating back to the 1970s when two unbeaten ringmasters named Carlos Zarate and Alfonso Zamora collided.

Lopez, the Boricua Bomber who hails from the same hometown (Caguas) as next Manny Pacquiao foe Miguel Cotto takes a 25-0, 23 KOs record into a title defense against unheralded Olivier Lontchi (18-0-2) Saturday night in Atlantic City, will appear on the same show with Gamboa this autumn Arum said.

“We will put them on the same show against different guys to build up the appetite for what should be a sensational fight between them later.”

Gamboa, who is also promoted by ex-fighter Ahmet Oner, has a pro record of 15-0, 13 by KO. he fights for a WBO interim featherweight title on Arum’s July 25 Latin Fury PPV show in Mexico.

The Z boys–Zarate and Zamora–were both unbeaten and hugely popular when they finally collided in a 10-rounder at hte Inglewood Forum on April 23, 1977. Zamora was knocked out in four rounds by the classier Zarate in a fight which also included a masked man jumping into the ring during a round.

He got knocked out in about 12 seconds by the LAPD.

I know because I witnessed both fights, the one inside the ring and the beatdown the coppers gave the miscreant.
