Michael Domingo?s career gets back on track

AFTER getting KOed by a Hepatitis B virus, ALA boy Michael Domingo is now back on track.

The virus that infected Domingo hindered his quest for bigger fights in the US and also threatened to end his surging boxing career last year. But after passing the tests for the virus in different hospitals, including the yearly checkup of the Games and Amusement Board, he can now look forward to fighting in the US again.

Domingo has received an offer to fight in the US on Sept. 12 against Mexican Cuautemoc Vargas in Las Vegas.

Although details of the fight and the contract haven?t been sent to ALA Promotions, Domingo?s handlers are keen on accepting the proposal.

?We gave them our word that we are interested in the fight,? ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told Sun.Star yesterday.

Cleared

The 29-year-old Domingo was supposedly scheduled be on the biggest fight of last year against Nestor Rocha, but that was foiled after he tested positive in the US for Hepatitis B.

?He has been cleared here in the Philippines and there is no reason that he won?t be cleared there,? said Aldeguer.

Aldeguer is optimistic that this fight will be the first stage for Domingo?s mission for a world title match.

?The good thing is that he?s given a fight in the States. This will be his stepping stone for bigger fights,? he said. ?We?ll take it one fight at a time.?

Although Domingo?s record is unattractive ?38 victories, 14 losses and two draws with 16 knockouts? he has fought some of the best like World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight titlist Jorge Linares and interim WBA super bantamweight champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym. He also had wins against former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin and erstwhile undefeated prospect Miguel Roman.

After his foiled US fight, Domingo also did not stop training and has been sparring with AJ Banal, Z Gorres, Robert Allanic and former world champion Malcolm Tu?acao. Domingo?s next foe, Vargas, has a record of 15 wins with two losses and 10 knockouts.

He has once fought World Boxing Organization super bantamweight titleholder Juan Manuel Lopez and was stopped in the sixth round after his corner threw in the towel last Jan. 19, 2007.
