Manny Pacquiao demolished Ricky Hatton in 2 rounds last month while Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going up, or should I say going down, to fight Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18, but all everybody seems to be talking about is the possibility of a Pacquiao and Mayweather mega-fight.
Fans, analysts and fighters alike have been subjected to debates, arguments and discussions as to whether who really is currently the best boxer in the planet as of the moment. Many say Mayweather is still tops because he holds an unblemished record and never really lost any luster since he merely took a break from the sport in his temporary retirement. More however have been leaning towards Pacquiao due to his sensational performances since Mayweather left the sport and he is currently considered the best Pound-for-Pound fighter in the world after all.
Since Mayweather?s retirement, Pacquiao has gone up to demolish bigger boxers (2 champions and one legend) in three different weight classes he had never fought in before. Mayweather defeated two of those three in Hatton and De la Hoya but had to do it in a less spectacular way than Pacquiao did. Many still contend that Floyd has the physical edge because of his weight, quickness and that he possesses a far more superior game than Pacquiao. Others though just feel that Pacquiao is simply in the prime of his boxing career right now and would be almost impossible to beat by anybody in his natural weight class just like Michael Jordan during his 6-ring title run. Another scary fact about Pacquiao is that he just still keeps on improving with every fight.
Comparing the two fighters is like comparing apples and oranges though. Each has his own style and personality that couldn?t be any more different in terms of comparing two great fighters. Both are similarly successful and popular in the same sport despite being almost opposite in the way they achieved it. With that said, there?s nothing wrong with still trying to compare apples and oranges either right? Ergo, here we go.
The world has been calling Manny Pacquiao the Pound-for-Pound king of boxing; Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been trying to convince the world he is still the Pound-for-Pound king.
Mayweather Jr. is an orthodox counter-puncher who sits and waits and often decisions his way to victory; Pacquiao is an aggressive southpaw who pressures his opponents throughout the fight and knocks people down, if not out, every time he fights.
Pacquiao has difficulty talking in English during interviews even though he has vastly improved his vocabulary; Mayweather Jr. has difficulty trying to stop talking.
Mayweather Jr. plays a great villain and sells himself and his fights with his gab; Pacquiao is a genuine good guy to a fault sometimes just like when he wouldn?t even foul back Agapito Sanchez when he was getting hit by cheap shot after cheap shot early in his career.
Mayweather was ?07; Manny Pacquiao is ?09.
Pacquiao spends his money and gives it away to less fortunate people in the community; Floyd spends his money on lavishness and less fortunate people in Floyd?s community have been reported to have stolen his money.
Mayweather is having tax problems with the government; Manny Pacquiao is the government.
Pacquiao gives you non-stop action and entertainment every time he fights; Mayweather Jr. gives you non-stop entertainment every time he talks.
Mayweather Jr. is a bona fide celebrity with appearances in the WWE, TV shows, rap singles with Youtube videos and TV ads; Pacquiao is a superstar in his country?s entertainment industry with platinum selling records, blockbuster movies he starred in and about him, TV shows and commercials.
Pacquiao provides a brutal sport such as boxing, a role model figure with the way he conducts himself,lives his life and his charitable efforts like his foundation to help cure Cancer; Floyd… well not so much.
