P4P CROWN NOT EVERYTHING FOR FLOYD Jr

Floyd Mayweather Jr isn’t desperate to retain his P4P crown when he returns to the ring on July 18.

‘Money’ makes his eagerly-awaited comeback against Juan Manuel Marquez in a catchweight contest at 144lbs in Las Vegas.

The bout pits the former P4P king against the man widely acclaimed as number two behind current ruler Manny Pacquiao.

Floyd Jr says that mythical title isn’t something he desperately craves again, but says he does want to add some lustre to an already glittering career.

“I’m going to go down in history as one of the best fighters that ever lived,” he said.

“I’m just trying to put extras on my mark in the Hall of Fame. I’m not here to rate myself. I just thank God that he blessed me with the ability that I was blessed with.”

Mayweather Jr stunned the boxing world by announcing his retirement last June, but admits he didn’t realise he’d miss the sport so much.

“I was really missing just being around the sport. I was training every day, going to the fitness gym and to the boxing gym every now and then and working on it anyway, so I said to myself I may as well take it to the next level.”

Mayweather Jr had his own take on Pacquiao’s recent demolition of Ricky Hatton, but says he isn’t busting a gut to overtake the Filipino at the the head of the P4P rankings.

“Pacquiao went out there and did what he had to do. Ricky Hatton didn’t stick to the game plan, and any fighter can get caught cold in the first couple of rounds. So things happened but we move on.

“I don’t fight for bragging rights, I did that early in my career. This is now a whole new era of fighters. I’m just here to continue to do what I do and that’s to be the best.”
