As first reported by 8CountNews’ Peter Czymbor, it appears as if Floyd Mayweather Jr and Floyd Mayweather Sr may have reunited and joined forces once again. In a phone conversation between Czymbor and Floyd Mayweather Sr, Czymbor was told by Big Floyd that he was currently in the gym with his son. It seems pretty definite that any good relations between Hatton and Mayweather are now lukewarm at best and a new chapter has started.
It appears that there was some infighting within the Hatton camp leading up to the big May 2nd showdown between Hatton and Pacquiao.
Big Floyd went on the record and told the world that he believed that Ricky Hatton should ?retire from the sport?, and Floyd’s brother Roger right on HBO’s 24/7 told the world that he thought Hatton should ?throw his gear into a fire and burn it if he couldn’t beat Pacquiao.? Not very nice words, not very encouraging words, and not very supportive words coming from those who are supposed to have been Hatton supporters.
The pieces seem to be coming together, and it appears as if the stars and planets are beginning to line up that will eventually enable a match up between the current pound for pound king, Manny Pacquiao and the guy who used to hold that title, Floyd Mayweather Jr. This of course depending on if Floyd can get past a very dangerous foe in Juan Manuel Marquez.
The timing of this seems a little odd, and it’s ironic that on the day of Pacquiao vs Hatton, Floyd Mayweather Jr would announce that he’s returning, and that his opponent would be Juan Manuel Marquez. 8CountNews asked Freddie Roach about this and he too is puzzled, ? I think it’s odd that Mayweather would make his announcement now, I think Floyd might be scared to fight Manny.? Roach also told 8CountNews that they have no intentions on waiting around on Floyd, ?We don’t need him, he needs us? said Roach, ?We are the ones on top right now, not Floyd Mayweather.? The bottom line is this, if Floyd beats Marquez it is highly likely that negotiations will begin shortly afterwards for the pound for pound king battle between Pacquiao and Mayweather.
If Mayweather and Pacquiao were to ever face each other, it would have to be at a catch-weight that is fair to both sides. 8CountNews’ Sarah Fina in a recent video interview with Roger Mayweather (Floyd’s trainer) got his thoughts on this, ?When Pacquiao fought De La Hoya he fought him at 147lbs, so whatever makes the money makes the most sense.? This a far cry from what Leonard Ellerbe told me back in September.
This writer ran into Mayweather Jr adviser Leonard Ellerbe not too long ago at the Timothy Bradleyy vs Edner Cherry fight in Biloxi, MS. I asked him if he thought Floyd would come out of retirement and fight Pacquiao. Leonard looked at me and said, ?Never happen.? Never say never Mr Ellerbe, never say never.
Mayweather critics predict that he will dodge Pacquiao by pricing himself out of the fight, or he will not agree on a catch-weight number. This writer believes that Floyd Mayweather, pending a victory over Marquez will indeed find a way to make this fight happen. The money that this fight would generate would be astonishing, and I happen to believe that Floyd does cherish the title of being called the pound for pound king. As of right now he is not the pound for pound king, Manny Pacquiao is. The pride of The Philippines is on top of the world right now with back to back wins over Oscar De La Hoya, and a 2 round thrashing over Ricky Hatton. Not to mention he cleaned out every Mexican champion that was put in his way.
The one guy that has given Manny fits is Juan Manuel Marquez. There are many who would rather see Manny face Marquez in a trilogy fight. Marquez fans believe that their guy defeated Pacquiao once, and got a draw once. They have a legitimate cause for calling for the trilogy fight. If Marquez pulls off an upset and defeats Floyd Mayweather, I believe that the trilogy fight will indeed happen. However, if Marquez comes up short, the trilogy fight would have to wait awhile because Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao would have something to settle. Who, once and for all is the pound for pound king?
