They won’t be sitting around the campfire singing “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and roasting marshmallows any night soon.
I can’t see Coach Freddie Roach sitting at his favorite LA Irish saloon with a Guinness in his hand while Floyd Mayweather Sr. sips his trademark Mountain Dew across from him.
I am not saying there is pugilistic peace in our time between the fight game’s two highest profile trainers.
But, stop the presses and alert the United Nations, Ricky Hatton’s trainer and Manny Pacquiao’s beloved No Joke Coach Roach, a/k/a Freddie From Dedham, finally agree on one hot topic.
They both think, in the wake of getting dropped like an empty safe off the roof of a tall building by Pacman, that Hatton should and must now retire from the ring.
Unfortunately, as is usually the case in these sorts of things, Hatton seemed to be in immediate denial even as he was waiting for brain scan results from a Las Vegas hospital Sunday morning.
“I’ve been worse,” Hatton told reporters through a camp aide. “’I’ve felt worse after going 12 hard rounds in a fight. I just could not see Manny’s punches coming at me. I’ve got to admit, though, that last shot (a wicked left hook to the jaw) was a great shot.”
