In a press conference with Mexican media, Golden Boy Promotion’s newly retired Oscar De La Hoya announced that he is searching for the next Mexican boxing idol.
“Mexican boxing is of vital importance to our promotional company,” said De La Hoya. “Right now we are working on finding the new star of Mexican boxing.”
Who does “The Golden Boy” have in mind?
“It could be “Canelo” Saul Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez Junior,” said De La Hoya.
Chavez Junior has received much exposure through his current promoters Top Rank and Zanfer, but for De La Hoya to mention his name one must wonder if the son of Mexican ring legend Julio Cesar Chavez is near the end of any promotional obligations.
Saul Alvarez an 18 year old welterweight fighter from Guadalajara, Mexico does not have the notoriety of Chavez Junior in the United States, but has a growing fan base in Mexico and is considered by many experts to have a greater upside.
Alvarez has a record of 26-0, with 19 KOs and Chavez Junior, 23 years of age, stands at 39-0-1, with 29 KOs.
