Miguel Cotto and uncle – trainer Evangelista Cotto come to blows

Those close to Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto and his team have seen the tension between the star and uncle-trainer Evangalista Cotto building up over the years. Rumors regarding the rift between fighter an life-long trainer point to the unclear origins, but today in Caguas, Puerto Rico the bad blood boiled over.

In the opening week of training camp for a June 13th bout with tough as nails Joshua Clottey, Miguel Cotto and Evangalista Cotto exchanged punches in a conflict over the details of the camp.

According to Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Dia, the uncle and nephew got in a disagreement over the Miguel’s desire to move the training camp to Florida in a few weeks Wednesday afternoon. When Evangelista voiced his concerns over this arrangement, he was immediately fired and told by Cotto, “I am the boss here.” The pair then exhanged blows inside of the gym, were seperated, and again engaged in physical combat outside of the gym before being sperated again.

A Caguas police representive claims the situation was then controlled, the parties hugged, and came to peace.

Yet, the El Nuevo Dia report goes on to state that while driving his 2009 Jaguar, Miguel was attacked by Evangelista, who threw a brick that broke the passenger side window of the car. Though attacked, Miguel did not press charged against his uncle.

It is reported that Evangelista had to visit the hospital due to a blow thrown by the former welterweight champion, and that could cause Miguel to face criminal charges.

All of this takes place in the shadow of a June, 2008 beating Miguel took at the hands of Antonio Margarito — a beating that might have been handed down with the use of illegal, plaster laced wraps by the Mexican slugger.

This is all getting more interesting than the telenovelas on Univision.
