Melligen battles Montano on May 1

ALA junior welterweight Mark Jason Melligen will be facing the toughest fight of his life as he battles Mexican Ramon Montano on May 1 in Las Vegas.

Melligen?s second US fight, which will be on the eve of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton card, is an integral part of his career in the US because if he makes an impact with this battle, he could land a contract with Bob Arum?s renowned promotional outfit Top Rank Promotions.

Arum has already shown interest in signing up the light welterweight prospect.

?He knows that this is his biggest fight. It will be make-or-break for him,? Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday. ?If he impresses Top Rank, he will get a contract with them.?

Melligen left for the US yesterday along with ALA Gym trainer Edito Villamor, who will be guiding him on his difficult assignment.

The 22-year-old Cebu-based fighter will be training at Top Rank?s Gym in Las Vegas.

During Melligen?s training for his debut fight in the US against Gerardo Cesar Prieto at Roger Mayweather?s Gym last March, he impressed Roger and former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.

?Melligen had good feedback from trainers. He has always been a very skillful and talented fighter. He just wasn?t given a lot of opportunities here in the Philippines because his weight is not so popular here,? said the young Cebuano promoter.

Melligen stopped Prieto in the fifth round of their eight-round war last March 7 in Denver, Colorado.

Although Montano doesn?t have an impressive record with 17 wins, three defeats and two draws with just two knockouts, Aldeguer believes Melligen shouldn?t let his guard down because the former Pacquiao sparring partner has fought quality opponents in former lightweight champion David Diaz and undefeated warrior Dimitri Salita.
