Floyd Mayweather’s grandmother says retired Grand Rapids boxer returning to ring July 11

Add another voice to the rumors swirling about retired Grand Rapids champ Floyd Mayweather’s return to boxing.

Mayweather’s grandmother, Bernice, says her grandson is preparing himself for a return to the ring July 11 in Las Vegas.

“He’s going to be fighting again,” Bernice Mayweather said. “He’s in the gym training right now.”

She added that Roger Mayweather, the uncle of the former pound-for-pound king, is training Mayweather for the July fight.

There has been no word on who Mayweather’s opponent might be.

ESPN has reported Mayweather, 32, may have a tune-up fight July 11 in preparation for a megafight in the fall. Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton, “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez have been mentioned as possible opponents for the fall bout.

Floyd Mayweather Sr., who is training Hatton, has said his son is preparing for a comeback.

But the Mayweather’s spokesman, Leonard Ellerbe, has denied the reports.

“Floyd does what he does. He always goes to the gym and keeps himself in shape (from a fitness standpoint),” Ellerbe said.
