EVERY professional boxer?s dream is to win a world title. However, not every boxer can attain that.
ALA boy Z ?The Dream? Gorres and Milan ?Melinyo? Melindo are out to prove that they have what it takes to become world champions as they will be tested against opponents who have already been at the pinnacle of the sport.
Gorres will be up against former International Boxing Federation mini-flyweight titlist Roberto ?Mako? Leyva for the vacant World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight crown, while Melindo will face veteran former world champion Muhammad ?Rock Breaker? Rachman in a 10-round battle at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino tonight.
Gorres has fought some of the best in the sport, including world champions Fernando Montiel and Vic Darchinyan. However, he fell short in his aim to become a world champion, while Leyva has already been to the top and became a world champion in 2001.
In the weigh-in for the ?Judgment at the Waterfront? boxing promotion yesterday, both Gorres and Leyva went over the bantamweight limit of 118 pounds.
The 26-year-old Gorres tipped the scales at 118 ? lbs, while the Mexican fighter was over the limit by a pound.
However, both boxers made it in their second try after sweating it out. Gorres made it at 118, while Leyva overdid it at 116 ? lbs.
Gorres has a record of 28 wins, two losses and two draws with 15 knockouts, while 29-year-old Leyva has 25 victories, eight defeats and a draw with 20 stoppages.
On the other hand, Melindo is making waves at the mini-flyweight division and is looking to add Rachman to his unblemished resume, while the 37-year-old Indonesian warrior plans to beat the youngster to groom himself for another shot at a world title.
