WORLD Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight champion Donnie ‘Ahas’ Nietes of Murcia, Negros Occidental and Barangay Granada, Bacolod City, may have a tight schedule until 2010 if fight promoters and Nietes’ handlers have their way.
Reports from Manila indicated Wednesday that Nietes is interested in fighting International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion Ulises Solis of Mexico.
Nietes’ trainer Edmund Villamor told Manila sports writers in last Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Sports Forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue in Manila that the Negrense champion will have no problem beating Solis in case a fight between the two is finalized.
“Donnie will surely win against Solis. Nietes is too shifty – he moves like a snake and Solis will surely find Nietes a hard target,” said Villamor.
If the dream fight between Nietes and Solis is finally arranged, it would however be sometime next year yet as Solis is slated to take on Fil-Am Brian Viloria next month.
Nietes, a former amateur standout of the Negros Amateur Boxing Association (Naba) headed by former Bacolod City councilor and now Games and Amusement Board (GAB) commissioner Juan Ramon ‘Monju’ Guanzon, is scheduled to defend his 105-pound title for two or three more times this year.
The 26-year-old Negrense champ, who is handled by Cebu-based Negrense boxing guru Antonio ‘Bidoy’ Aldeguer, is reportedly being eyed to take on WBO interim champion Manuel Vargas in either June or July this year.
Nietes said he hasn’t viewed any of Solis’ tapes yet but he believes he can defeat the Mexican, especially since there is still ample time to prepare for the prospective fight.
Nietes posted a convincing unanimous decision victory over Mexican Erik Ramirez in Oaxaca City, Mexico last month and is scheduled to go on a two-week vacation before going back to training in Cebu.
He said he also plans to undergo a one-month training at Freddie Roach’ Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles where he also trained prior to his fight with Ramirez.
