While his left fist remains as his bread-and-butter, Manny Pacquiao is expected to unload more often with his right when he faces off with British Ricky Hatton on May 2 in Las Vegas.
Former world heavyweight king Michael Moorer, a southpaw like Pacquiao, has been in charge of the Filipino?s training ever since Wild Card guru Freddie Roach left for Manchester to work the corner of rising lightweight star Amir Khan.
Moorer told The Ring magazine?s on-line edition that while Pacquiao is “very fast” and he just “can?t keep up with his speed”, his chances of scoring a sensational victory will depend on his right hand.
“Their 12 minutes in the ring was a learning session, not a workout,” The Ring?s Doug Fischer and Michael Rosenthal wrote.
“I went over very specific things with him. Being a former southpaw fighter, I have the advantages of knowing what punches are going to work against right-handed fighters,” said Moorer, who has been working as a training assistant under Roach the last two and a half months.
Moorer said Pacquiao should perfect throwing “the right hook, right uppercut and the straight to the body and head” as these blows often not detected early by “righties”.
Still, Moorer said the left hand of Pacquiao will remain as the cherry on top of the sorbet.
“There are ways to hide the straight left and the left uppercut. For instance, you can slide into to the right and blind them with the jab,” added Moorer.
