NEGRENSE reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion Gerry Pe?alosa apologized to his Cebuano fans.
He apologized for two reasons: he wasn’t able to knock out his Mexican opponent German Meraz last Saturday when they clashed at the Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City, and he felt he wasn’t able to put up a good fight for the benefit of the fans.
“I simply could not come up with combinations that would please the fans because in the first place, my opponent kept on dancing his way away from me trying to avoid my punches,” Pe?alosa told Sun.Star Bacolod in a telephone interview Monday.
“That’s why I said I’m so sorry to my Cebuano fans because I wanted to give them a good fight but I couldn’t do it by myself …my opponent had no interest in fighting me,” added Pe?alosa who now has a record of 54 wins, six losses and 36 knockouts.
But the Negrense champ assured he achieved his aim of getting through a good workout in preparation for his much-awaited title fight against reigning WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez of Puerto Rico whom he is scheduled to fight on April 25 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Pe?alosa challenged Lopez to “be ready” for their April 25 bout.
“It’s been my ultimate dream to win three world titles in three different weight divisions. If I can achieve that, then maybe it’s time for me to consider retirement,” added the former World Boxing Council (WBC) super flyweight champion.
Pe?alosa scored a unanimous decision victory over Meraz last Saturday with the three judges scoring the one-sided fight 100-89, 100-89, and 99-90.
Meanwhile, the camp of Pe?alosa has not yet issued a statement as to whether the Negrense champ is accepting the invitation of renowned trainer Freddie Roach for him to train at the world-famous Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles before his scheduled April 25 fight against Lopez.
