Easy win for Gerry

WORLD Boxing Organization bantamweight king Gerry ?Fearless? Pe?alosa eased through his tune-up battle against Mexican German Meraz and scored a unanimous decision victory last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Pe?alosa stepped into the ring looking for a fight, but Meraz seemed to have other ideas and spent the whole 10 rounds retreating.

The 22-year-old Mexican threw a handful of punches but the stifling defense of Pe?alosa kept them from landing.

Pe?alosa had the more accurate blows and knocked down his Mexican opponent in the second round with a left hook to the head.

The 36-year-old veteran world champion was a little frustrated in the later rounds because his opponent kept circling around the ring and wouldn?t trade punches with him.

Still, Pe?alosa just labored and landed clean blows to the body.

Two judges gave all 10 rounds to the Cebuano, 100-89, while the other scored it 99-90.

Pe?alosa improved to 54 victories, six losses and two draws with 36 stoppages, while Meraz slumped to 24 wins, nine losses and two draws with 12 knockouts.

Pe?alosa was happy that he got a tune-up before his upcoming title battle with undefeated WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez.

?I?m very happy because I haven?t fought here for a long time. It was a good fight in preparation for Lopez,? said Pe?alosa.

However, Pe?alosa added he was a bit disappointed that he wasn?t able to give his Cebuano fans a good fight in what could be his last fight in Cebu City.

?I?m sorry, I wanted to give a good fight but I can?t do it on my own because my opponent had no interest in fighting me,? said Pe?alosa. ?I?m not sure if I?ll be back here. I think this will be my last fight.?
