The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, fresh from the successful staging of the National Open Championship in Bacolod, will conduct a countrywide talent search beginning March 22 with the Visayas leg.
?These tournaments and the succeeding ones are earmarked to discover young and talented boxers in the countryside,? said newly named ABAP executive director Ed Picson.
The Visayas tourney, followed by two more in Luzon (April 14-19) and Mindanao (May 10-16), will kick off the extensive grassroots program envisioned by telecommunications tycoon and ABAP chair Manny V. Pangilinan in the country?s quest for the first Olympic gold.
Picson will handle the day-to-day operations at ABAP and will assist ABAP president Ricky Vargas and secretary-general Patrick Gregorio in crafting programs geared towards the achievement of its Olympic goal.
?It?s a challenge that I?m excited to meet,? said Picson, who brings with him over three decades of experience in media and sports.
Picson is currently vice president of the Letran Alumni Foundation and was a Catholic Mass Media awardee for radio. His alma mater conferred on him the ?Letran Outstanding Alumnus Award? for broadcast media.
