THE LONG-overdue plan to regionalize the training of the national amateur boxers will be the first priority of the newly installed Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) president Ricky Vargas.
Vargas was in Cebu last Thursday to inspect the facilities in Cebu?the ALA Gym in Nasipit, Talamban, the RWS Boxing Gym in Punta Princesa and the Cebu City Sports Center Boxing gym.
?Cebu has very good facilities and since most of the boxers are from the Visayas, we might as well consider putting up the regional center here,? Vargas told reporters at dinner.
Cebu was the third stop of Vargas. His first stop was in Baguio City where he had a talk with the current national team members.
Then he flew to Davao City where he looked at the tentative location of a Mindanao training center for boxers before flying to Cebu. He is also scheduled to visit Bacolod.
Vargas will inspect the facilities in Bacolod, the host of the 2009 National Amateur Boxing Championships from Jan. 28 to Feb. 1.
