All indications are that a bout between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and junior welterweight ruler Ricky Hatton will become a reality for May 2nd. One source says that this matchup is basically a “done deal.” This fight will most likely take place at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao is coming off his eight-round destruction of Oscar De La Hoya on December 6th, while Hatton stopped Paulie Malignaggi in the 11th round on November 22nd. This fight figures to be perhaps the most anticipated of 2009, as each man brings a sizable and passionate fan base to the dance.
Two things come to mind here: first, let?s hope more than just a small fraction of tickets are made available to the general public. And second, that Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions make amends for that abomination of an undercard they put on underneath Pacquiao-De La Hoya.
– Great news for die-hard boxing fans, as FSN has made a commitment to air one international fight every month as part of their new ?Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period? series that will debut on December 23rd when they air Carl Froch?s entertaining 12-round decision over Jean Pascal for the WBC super middleweight crown.
– It looks like Showtime will be televising a championship doubleheader on March 14th from Manila, Philippines, when 115-pound titlists Nonito Donaire and Fernando Montiel unify their belts and WBC jr. flyweight titlist Ulisis Solis takes on Brian Viloria.
