Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he?s been told by family members his son would like to return to fight Manny Pacquiao.
Since Manny Pacquiao?s 8 round destruction of Oscar De La Hoya earlier this month, rumors have swirled about former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. returning to the ring for a showdown with Pacquiao.
Mayweather?s father and former trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. offered his insight to the situation in an interview with 8countnews.com on Tuesday.
?(Floyd Jr.) called my niece Janelle and he called my niece Latisha, and also he called my daughter Fatima?, said Floyd Mayweather Sr. from his home in Las Vegas. ?He called all those people in the same day and told them to tell me that he wanted to fight Pacquiao and he want to train him.?
Though Mayweather Sr. has heard all of this information from numerous family members, he?s yet to discuss the possibility of reuniting with his son from Mayweather Jr. himself. However, he feels that what his family has told him is true.
?They?re not going to lie about nothing like that?, he says.
However, no conversation on the topic has been arranged by father and son says Mayweather Sr.
?(If) my son want to talk to me, he got my number. I don?t have his number, but he has my number?he know how to call me.? Said Mayweather Sr.
It is believed that Manny Pacquiao?s next fight will be against the reigning junior welterweight champion Ricky Hatton, whom Mayweather Sr. trained for his successful title defense against Paulie Malignaggi in November.
The Grand Rapids Press reports Mayweather Jr. would fight Pacquiao following his proposed bout with Hatton. Hatton stated in interviews following his most recent fight against Malignaggi that he hoped to have Mayweather Sr. in his corner for his next fight.
If Mayweather Sr. were to train Hatton for a fight with Pacquiao, with a potential Pacquiao ? Mayweather Jr. fight at stake should Pacquiao win, Mayweather Sr. could find himself in an awkward predicament of working against an opponent who could create a megafight with his own son should Pacquiao win.
?I?m going to wait and see what happens?, said Floyd Sr., who did not give a definitive answer on what he?d do in that situation.
Previously Mayweather Jr. expressed his distaste for his uncle / former trainer Roger Mayweather training Steve Forbes to beat Oscar De La Hoya in what was a stay busy bout for De La Hoya, who was expected to fight Mayweather Jr. next. That fight never occurred due to Floyd Jr.?s sudden retirement.
