Nietes vs. Ramirez

CEBU boxing patron Antonio Aldeguer believes a fight with world-rated Erik Ramirez of Mexico will serve world minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes well.

Aldeguer told www.sportsnews.ph that Ramirez will be a much better test for Nietes as he is a typical Mexican warrior who rarely runs away from a fight.

?Ramirez is tall and a good fighter and he does not run like (Ivan) Calderon. I hope the fight will materialize,? said Aldeguer. These days fight fans are hard to please when it comes to showcasing fighters who rely mostly on their defensive arsenal as they prefer to see toe-to-toe battles.

Calderon, a pound-for-pound entrant reportedly wants to move down to 105 where he once held Nietes? current World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimum weight crown.

Ramirez, 26, has exclusively fought in Mexico in compiling a record of 25-5-1 with 19 KOs. Two of his losses were against former world champion Nelson Dieppa and to former world title challenger Lorenzo Trejo.

Calderon (32-0, 6 KOs) defended the 105 crown 11 times before capturing the WBO light flyweight crown which he currently holds.

After his third defense of the 108-lb. crown against former champion Hugo Fidel Cazares last August in a rematch, Calderon declared his intention to move up and conquer the flyweight division.

Second defense

Nietes, 26, will be making his second defense of the crown he won by decisioning Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym of Thailand on Sept. 30, 2007 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu.

Nietes (23-1-3, 14 KOs) had one successful title defense last August when he stopped Nicaraguan Eddy Castro inside two rounds.

Aldeguer added that international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz is the one doing the matchmaking for Nietes and that they are targeting the first or second week of February as possible date.

Nietes? next title defense may be held in Mexico. (PR)
